About 11 kilometres long, A very unique lake that is located half in North Kawartha Twp and the other half in Cardiff Twp. The lake fluctuates quite a bit as it is fed by natural springs, Eels Creek. There is a dam located at the south end that controls the water levels. It is a feeder lake for the Trent-Severn Waterway, from Eels Lake to Eels Creek and beyond. The fluctuation can be 10 feet or more, depending on the year and the amount of rainfall or drought the county experiences. An advantage of the fluctuating water is that the lake stays quite clean.
The Lake was named after Eel Cow, a 19th-century Ojibwa leader, and a fun fact, he was the brother of Jack Cow, whom Jack's Lake was named after, “Handsome Jack”. The history in this area is very deep. Surrounding forests were heavily logged in the 1800’s, and the timber was sent down Eels Creek to mills at Stoney Lake.
The lakes in this area have such a unique look to them, with their granite outcroppings and beautifully treed lots it is absolutely breathtaking with its intense fall colors.
The Eels Lake Cottagers Association has been in function for over 70 years and they hold a regatta each year. You can check out their website for more information and dates at the link here http://eelslakecottagers.com/
