Anstruther Lake

A hidden gem in North Kawartha. The lake is about 6 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide. Most of this lake is water access and abuts Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, which is second in size to Algonquin Provincial Park. There are roughly 230 cottages on this lake, and the cottagers' association holds a regatta generally on the civic holiday every summer. Many of my family's memories include the diving cliffs on the east side of the lake. Given the shape of this lake, there can be strong winds and large waves on parts of the lake, so be cautious. Water flows into anstruther Lake through Camp Creek and out through Anstruther Creek.  Known for its clean, clear water, I remember there was a lady who used to regularly test the lake for drinking water, not sure if she does that anymore, but it always passed.

There are a few campsites on the lake that can be booked through Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, and also a parking lot off Anstruther Lake Rd. The lake is considered a fish sanctuary so no ice fishing is permitted. It is about 9 kilometres off Hwy 28. The snowmobile trail is accessed behind the Anstruther Lake Marina for all you sledding enthusiasts.

For those of you who like a good portage, you can do so at the north end of this lake into Rathbun and several other small lakes in the park. Access to over 100 different campsites if you are up for the challenge, paddle & hike. The lake is clean, clear and absolutely breathtaking. Granite outcroppings throughout the lake have been a source for many photographers and artists from all over the world. Still home to many old true cottages that bring back memories for most of us, this lake is a gem and should not be overlooked when searching for your special spot. The Anstruther Lake Cottagers Association works closely with residents and levels of government to enhance and conserve the lake and its surroundings. The association was founded in 1963, and I suggest contacting them for their calendar of events and any other news relevant to the lake.
